Nelson, Jane A., 93, of Riverside, died peacefully on December 10, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Charles F. Nelson, Jr.
Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Charles G. and Eilleen A. (Fowler) Maytum, she lived in Riverside for 55 years.
Mrs. Nelson was Secretary to the Director of Risk Management at Rhode Island Hospital for 13 years before retiring in 1991. She was a graduate of University of Rhode Island Class of 1994 with the highest distinction.
Jane was a volunteer for the Red Cross Nurses Aid, Bradley Hospital, Butler Hospital, a knitter for Woman & Infants Hospital and a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Mrs. Nelson was a communicant of St. Brendan’s Church. She was a member of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art, The Rhode Island Historical Society and St. Anthony’s Guild. She was a WWII “War Worker” at Federal Products. She was a recipient of the Senator Anthony Prize for excellence in Public Schools.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen A. Nelson of Providence; two sons, Mark C. Nelson of Harrington, ME and Matthew J. Nelson of Tiverton; two granddaughters, Sarah J. Starck and Mariah Nelson; four great grandchildren, Matthew, Sydney, Ezra and Zachary and a step granddaughter, Ashlee O’Conner. She was the sister of the late Charles R. Maytum and John F. Maytum.
Her Funeral will be held on Tuesday December 17, 2019 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:45 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Brendan’s Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Calling hours are Monday 5-8 p.m. Flowers are respectfully omitted. Contributions in Jane’s memory to Lifespan Cancer Institute @ Miriam Hospital, P.O Box H, Providence, RI 02901 would be deeply appreciated.
I am sorry to read about Mrs. Nelson’s passing. While I have not seen her in a number of years, she was one of the nicest people you could ever know. My condolences to Mark, Matt and Kathy.
I worked with Jane in risk management at RI Hospital for 8 years before her retirement. She was without doubt one of the nicest, sweetest people I have ever known. And she was a great secretary. Plus she was a fount of useful local information. Want to know where to recycle paint – she could tell you where and what days and hours you could go. I was so impressed when she decided to get her college degree, but not surprised at how well she did. She made our work place calm, organized and welcoming – not an easy task in risk management. My condolences to Kathleen and the rest of the family.

Jane was a good friend of my mother Martha Cullen.
So sorry to see Jane has passed. We were neighbors for 41 years. It was a pleasure to see her kind and smiling face every day. She will definitely be missed. Condolences to her family also.

I was fortunate to have gotten to know Jane through our mutual love for animals. Jane took care of many animals over the years who would not have had a home otherwise. Jane was the kindest person. I so enjoyed talking to Jane who was well versed on so many topics. Whether she was gardening, caring for an animal or being a friend to so many in our neighborhood her sweet smile and kind hearted nature will be greatly missed. Some people say there are earth angels and if this is the case Jane was certainly one for she had a bright light which was unmistakable and that light continues on. My deepest sympathies to Kathy and all of Janes family.
We remember Jane from her days in Smith st…..so many years sgo.We exchanged Christmas cards for years and she was always good for a yak on “the land lines.” So sorry to lose an old friend.May the peace of God which is beyond all human understanding be with her and the family now and forever
I worked with Jane at Butler Hospital on the Institutional Review Board. She was always kind, caring, and very compassionate. I really valued her friendship. My condolences to her family. Sorry, I am not able to make the wake, I have a prior commitment. Will keep you all in my prayers.
Words cannot express the effect that the loss of Mrs. Nelsons passing will have on everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Our sincere condolences to all of the family. I will never forget how gracious and thoughtful she always was to everyone. May she rest in peace forever with her husband and brothers.
