Kennedy, John D., 88, of Thurston Street, Riverside, died peacefully at home on Friday February 4, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by four months of his beloved wife Margaret L. (Kelly) Kennedy, to whom he was married to for 61 years.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Eugene and Kathleen (Carroll) Kennedy, he lived in Riverside for 56 years.
Mr. Kennedy was a cashier for the former A&P Grocery Store, Riverside for many years where he met his wife. He then worked as a cashier at the former Chellel’s Market, Barrington for over 35 years. He took great pride in making sure he remembered all the customers’ names insisting that a personal touch is very important.
John was a graduate of Hope High School Class of 1951. He was a communicant of St. Brendan Church. He enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Seekonk Happy Couples Bowling League. He was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan who couldn’t wait for opening day each spring.
Mr. Kennedy was a United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
John was a gentleman to the end. He was also the King of Dad jokes and always had a joke for every occasion.
He is survived by his children, Cheryl L. Mello and his husband Ted of East Providence, Steven P. Kennedy and his wife Cheryl of Winter Haven, FL, Colleen M. Gravel and her husband Bob of East Providence, Susan J. Kennedy of Riverside; eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Joseph Kennedy and Carol Malloy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday February 11, 2022 in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside at 10 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted. Contributions in John’s memory to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105 would be deeply appreciated.

I remember John through Chellel’s Market. John, Rachel and Elsie (my mom) worked there together for many, many years and were a great team. I’ll always remember John’s kindness, compassion and numerous jokes. Sending the entire family prayers and good wishes during this difficult time.

He was a man for all people with a joke for all occasions. I think he made them up as he went along. Heaven better get ready for the show, because John and Roy are both there now and it’ll never be the same.
You will be missed dearest John, here on earth, but welcomed into the open arms of our Lord and the many, many wonderful and loving family members who preceded you. All our love goes with you and our deepest condolences to the kids and the whole family. We were blessed to know and love you.
