Ann Sophia Greene, 91, of Chapel Road, Barrington, died unexpectedly on September 1, 2024 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence due to complications of a fall.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Edward O. and Madelyn C. (Crombie) Greene, she was a lifelong resident of Barrington.
Ann was a graduate of Barrington High School Class of 1951 and Tufts University Class of 1955 where she earned a degree in Education. She furthered her education at Boston University earning a Masters degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreational Activities for the Handicap Child.
Ms. Greene enjoyed a 35 year career teaching Physical Education, including aquatics in the East Providence School system before retiring in 1991. She was appointed to the Physical Education Department in 1955. During her career, Ann volunteered to teach Water Safety Instructor courses for the American Red Cross and received numerous awards for her volunteer service in aquatics.
Anne was a communicant of St. Luke Church. She was a 35 year member of the Barrington Women’s Club which brought her much pleasure and many friendships as she excelled in leadership and Bridge. Her idea of a perfect day was bidding 6 No Trump and making it!!! She enjoyed reading mystery novels and watching football and Jeopardy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday September 6, 2024 in St. Luke Church, Washington Road, Barrington at 10 a.m. A private burial will be held in St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery, Portsmouth, RI. Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted.
Just heard the news today. My condolences on Ann’s passing. We had a mutual friend, Ann Joyce. I can picture my two Anns enjoying heaven together!
Miss Green was an inspiration to all! Students who passed through her doors were afforded the opportunity to experience a dedicated, compassionate and caring individual. Rest in Peace Miss Green!
First I knew her as Miss Greene, my teacher; and then she became my friend Ann through the Women’s Club. She was a special woman who always kind and supportive. She will be missed
God Bless you Ann, Miss Greene was my teacher, later my colleague and fortunately I continued to see her often at mass in St Luke’s after she retired.
I will miss Ann ,she was always available to help with any project.Ann was an intelligent,interesting conversationalist she will be missed.
I loved talking with her! We were both teachers and she gave me great ideas. A lovely lady with a beautiful smile who was fun to be with. We’ll all miss her.
Ann will be so missed by the Barrington Women’s club. She was a leader and participated actively. She was the Parliamentarian for the Board most recently. We will miss her!

I’m deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Ann. Although I knew her over the past two years at Peck Center Bridge; her kindness, cheerfulness, and warm smiles made every game more enjoyable and uplifting. Her encouragement and positive spirit not only inspired my playing but also left a lasting impact on me and everyone she encountered. I’ll always remember her fondly and cherish the moments we shared at the bridge table. My thoughts are with all who knew her, during this difficult time. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
I am so sorry to hear of Ann’s passing. She was a very involved, vibrant individual who was always ready to help anyone in need. She will be truly missed.
