Antonio F. Mello, 88, of Deer Street, Rumford, died peacefully on October 15, 2024 at the Miriam Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Dolores V. (Portella) Mello.

Born in San Miguel, Azores, a son of the late Manuel Sousa Mello and Maria (Frias) Mello, he lived in East Providence since coming to the United States in 1945.

Mr. Mello worked in Data Processing for General Electric and retired after more than 31 years of service.

Antonio enjoyed playing cards, watching the stock market, fishing, clamming, Sunday mornings in church and spending time with his loving family. Above all else, Antonio adored his beloved wife, Dolores Mello.

Mr. Mello was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the Army Air Defense Command at Fort Banks, Winthrop, MA.

Besides his beloved wife of 65 years, he is survived by two sons, Anthony J. Mello and his wife Karen of Sterling, MA and Wayne A. Mello and his wife Missy of Rehoboth, MA; two daughters, Lori A. Marshall and her husband Del of Rumford and Lynn M. Vargas and her husband John of Riverside; eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two brothers, John F. Mello of Warwick and Joseph F. G Mello of Riverside. He was the brother of the late Manuel F. Mello and Mary D. Roy.

His Funeral will be held on Monday October 21, 2024 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis Xavier Church, N. Carpenter Street, East Providence at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.

Calling Hours are Monday morning from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. Flowers are respectfully omitted. Contributions in Antonio’s memory to Meeting Street School, 1000 Eddy Street, Providence, RI 02905 or Hasbro Children’s Hospital Foundation, Development Office, P.O Box H, Providence, RI 02901 would be deeply appreciated.

    Nicole and I are sorry for your loss. No more suffering. The last words he said to my mom was… “are you ready to see your papa”. He was ready to do the same. I will never forget that phrase. I believe it made it easier for my mom to pass. Hopefully he was thinking the same. Love always!!

    My deepest condolences! Tony was a wonderful and very intelligent man. I always appreciated his stock tips & discussing the stock market with him.. I will never forget him teaching me how to bunt way back when when he was a Manager in the Rumford little League.
